Tattoo Festival in Bangkok

There are all kinds of events taking place in Bangkok all the time, and yesterday, it was the Tattoo Festival at the MBK shopping mall.

You can find lots of tattoo artists in Bangkok, and actually in all of Thailand. Not just the modern tattoo as here ih the photo, but also traditional tattoos that have spiritual purposes, and that are said to sometimes even have magic powers to protect a person or bring a special fortune unto him.

The most popular example was actress Angelina Jolie who got tattooed by such a traditional Thai tattoo artist and later got high-paying movie roles that furthered her career even more. Ever since then, that tattoo artist has also become more and more popular and famous. But you can also find many Buddhist monks in temples who do these kinds of spiritual tattoos.

Bangkok Flower Market

Ella Marshall is a Quality Hunter from FinnAir. What’s a quality hunter you ask? Well, it’s someone who hunts around the world in search of… quality. All kinds of quality that is, but in particular food and quality of experiences.

So it is no surprise that one of her favorite places is Bangkok’s flower market Pak Khlong.

Just to watch the ladies at work, intricately threading Thai garlands, known as phuang malai, which are then sold for literal pennies was an honour in itself; to witness the quality of skill at work here far better than any of the mega mall the city seems to host in abundance. Each pocket was a blast for the eyes, unleashing new hues and tones I didn’t even know existed; all natural, all fresh.

When you walk along the flower market, you will find thousands and thousands of beautiful flowers that will delight your senses. The best thing you can do is just buy a bunch and bring it home to your hotel so that you can enjoy their sight and smells later on – or make someone happy by handing them a bunch of flowers.

The Bangkok Flower Marketplace is certainly a sight worth seeing. An overload for the senses, the fragrances and vibrant colours will have you instantly pleased that you simply made it right here. Open 24 hours, this is definitely 1 location to consist of in your trip to Thailand. With each and every selection that you simply could possibly believe of, you’re in a position to seek out a few of the most exquisite specimens for sale.

A massive hustling and bustling business that’s busy regardless from the time you go to, the Bangkok flower marketplace is fantastic to merely browse and individuals watch or could be a wonderfully inexpensive method to buy a bunch of a few of the freshest flowers obtainable for sale.

The sight of mopeds with enormous oversized clumps of flowers isn’t unusual, and also the street of flower vendors are much more than happy to do a deal with you. Definitely you will probably be forgiven for not being in a position to name the several species and varieties of flowers sold right here.

1 from the busiest occasions to go to is between two and three within the morning as this is when the markets receive their freshest deliveries of flowers. You are able to also buy fruit and vegetables right here too as herbs and spices. 1 from the greatest occasions to go the the Bangkok Flower Marketplace is within the cool from the evening. Simply because from the frequently humid and dense climate of Thailand, visiting the marketplace location within the evening could be a much better method to select any blooms you wish to buy. Fluorescent lighting will offer a nicely lit path for you to go from vendor to vendor and strike up a deal for your favourite flower bunch.

Renowned as 1 of probably the most voted flower markets within the world, the Bangkok Flower Marketplace is definitely a destination that should be seen in your travels to Thailand.

Bangkok in the reflections of a skyscaper

This is of course the reflections in a skyscraper that stands in Bangkok. And what a reflection that is – you can almost see the whole city, and how the Chao Phraya river runs right through it!

It is amazing to see how many high-rise buildings are being built here every year. Sure, Bangkok can not compete with Shanghai for that matter – but it better doesn’t try, because the quality of life here is much more pleasant the the frantic development over there.

One of the main reasons probably is that people still care a lot about the quality of life – what good for is all the money in the world, what good for are fancy cars and brandname bags, if all of this can’t make you happy? And the art of happiness is something that is more easy to master in Thailand than in many other places which can be found on our little blue and green and grey planet.

People of Bangkok

My favourite thing about Bangkok (well, aside from the food) are the people. There are so many CHARACTERS here. I mean, just look at this lady:

It’s kind of like New York City, but with more style.

Rooftop Bar Bangkok – Vertigo

Bangkok is spectacular and beautiful to look at in the nighttime. That is why skybars are so popular here. The Vertigo is my favourite rooftop bar here. It is located on top of the Banyan Tree hotel and very classy. And actually, the prices for drinks are quite good considering the view.

You get a full view over Bangkok – and there is no window glass between you and the city. It’s just open air. At the same time, they have built it in a way that doesn’t give you vertigo – despite the name of the bar 🙂

I would describe the feeling kind of as being on a ship that slowly and surely hovers over the city. It’s beautiful, because at night you can see the starts above – and the many lights below on the streets.

When you go there, it’s good to know about the dresscode: proper shoes and long pants. But even if you show up in flipflops and sweatpants, they will offer you shoes and pants for free, they won’t send you home.

If it’s a rainy day, be sure to call in advance to check if they open. Since it really is 100% open air, they close when it’s raining.

As far as prices go – a drink usually costs around 300 baht. That’s not cheap, but considering the location, the friendly, professional staff, the amazing view, the nice ambience… that’s a really fair price.

Out of all the friends that I brought here, there wasn’t a single one that didn’t like it. If you come to the end of your Bangkok sightseeing experience, then this is a great place to wrap it all up.

What’s more – from what I heard, the owner of the hotel Banyan Tree are really good guys.

Bangkok Arts & Culture Centre

Bangkok is a great citz for art lovers too. Sure, we don’t have much classical arts here, and you won’t run across a Picasso anytime soon here, but there are lots of creative, artsy people here who do stuff.

I call this guy “the alien who took too much skin whitening and diet products”. I’m sure there is a real story about him, but more importantly, the BACC (Bangkok Arts & Culture Centre) behind is an interesting building in the middle of popular Siam Square that many people just don’t take notice of. In it you find lots of art, small galleries and so on.

Bangkok Warning

Bangkok is a cool city, lots of nice, relaxed people here with funky ideas. In fact, one of the main reasons to be living in Bangkok is the crazy, wild mix of intensely interesting people.

And of course, that’s make a short Bangkok sightseeing trip worthwhile too. Just be sure to follow the safety instructions.

Aerobic Dancing in Bangkok

One of the things that you will see in many places around Bangkok in the evenings is public open-air aerobic dancing. Everybody can join in, and different instructors just show up each day and lead the group. At the end of the aerobic session, everyone can throw in some small money – usually 10 baht or 20 baht, which will be the payment of the aerobics instructor.

This picture was taken in the Lumphini park in Bangkok.

There are several reasons why these public aerobic classes are so popular. One reason simply is that it’s very noncommittal and open. You can join in whenever you like, but you never have to, you don’t have to sign up for anything, and everything is completely voluntary. So the first hurdle has been removed just by this kind of system.

But the more important reason probably is in the nature of the Thai character. They are people who love to have a good time, they like to do things together with other people, and they enjoy dancing. This is perfect, because it combines both having fun with taking care of their health and feeling good. The people who participate here are both young and old, men and women. If you are on a Bangkok sightseeing trip and you feel like joining an aerobics class, just head to the nearest public park in the evening and wait for the whole thing to start. It’s most fun if you come with friends though.

Lumphini Park Bangkok

The Lumpini park is one of the rare wide green spaces in Bangkok, and it’s a great place for a break from the concrete jungle. The large artificial lake gives it a serene atmosphere, and you can rent small boats to paddle along.

In the morning hours you find Chinese people performing Tai Chi here. This is of course the ancient health exercise from China that has been used for many centuries already and puts an emphasis on slow movements of the whole body combined with conscious breathing exercises.

It’s also very popular with joggers both in the morning and evening hours. During the daytime, it’s least crowded because of the direct sunlight and the typical Bangkok heat. However, there are plenty of shadowy places where you can escape to.

If you’ve done a lot of the “typical” Bangkok sightseeing, then this place can be a nice variation that is just around the corner of Silom and Saladaeng. (The area where the popular Patpong Night market is located).

And  here a video of Lumphini Park impressions:

Below is an article about Bangkok outdoor fitness options that also mentions the Lumphini park. It is titled “Bangkok’s Best Outdoor Fitness Options By MRT & BTS” and is written by guest author Daniel Remon, who runs Fitcorp Asia.

10 Reasons for Fitness Outdoors

1) It’s Free! No membership fees.

2) You beat the overcrowded gyms.

3) You don’t have to compete for machines or equipment at the gym.

4) You get outside away from the traffic and out of your office.

5) 100% natural. Listen to the birds and squirrels, especially in the morning.

6) You burn more 30% calories! Faster fat loss.

7) You can exercise with your friends, stronger support to increase adherence.

8) You won’t get harassed by sales people.

9) Research shows exercising outdoors reduces stress too!

10) You can breathe fresh air instead of being stuck inside the air conditioning.

Bangkok’s Best Parks by MRT & BTS:

1) Lumpini Park:

You can access Lumpini Park from various stations. Lumpini MRT and Silom MRT as well as Silom BTS. Lumpini is one of Bangkok’s largest public parks and in addition to having a 2.5 km track, you can also join in Tai Chi classes, aerobics, strength training in the ‘jungle gym’ as well as swim!

2) Benjakiti Park:

Queen Sirikit and Sukhumvit MRT, and Sukhumvit BTS (Just a 400 metre walk). My favourite park! A nice running track, with lots of different areas to discover including an aphithetre, stairs,a board walk along the lake and lots of park benches.

3) Benjasiri Park:

Prompong BTS. Benjasari is a small, yet convenient park to get to and there is plenty of shade if you don’t like to be out in the sun. There is also a public swimming pool and you can join aerobics in the park in the evenings.

4) Chatujuk Park:

Mo Chit BTS. A quiet large park with nice paths and super easy access to the BTS and MRT.

How to Conduct Your Own Outdoor Fitness Workout:

To get fit and to burn fat it is essential for you to raise your heart rate to levels that force your body to work harder. You must constantly change the stimulus for your body to respond to or you will fall into a plateau. A plateau is when you continue to do the same exercise however your body does not respond and you do not continue to lose weight or make improvements in strength or cardiovascular fitness.

Best Outdoor Fitness Drills:

1) Interval Training:

Jog for 30 seconds and power walk for 2 minutes. This elevates your heart rate and allows for plenty of recovery in between. You will be able t maintain a higher heart rate even though you are walking, ad this will allow you to burn more calories and therefore more fat!

2) Fartlek Training:

Similar to interval training, Fartlek is a Swedish word meaning ‘Speed play’. You need to jog for as long as you can, then walk for as long as you need to recover before preparing for your next round of jogging. Continue for a minimum of 20-30 minutes.

3) Swimming:

Yes even swimming can be an effective fat loss and fitness solution. How you swim will determine your results. Just any other form of exercise, to get fit or to lose fat, you must elevate the heart rate to maximize energy expenditure, calorie burn and fat loss.

4) Functional Strength:

Functional strength relates to any exercise which develops strength by using your body weight only. The basics you can start with include squats, lunges, push ups, abdominal crunches and bench dips. These five exercises alone will give you a complete full body workout in under 5 minutes!! Aim to complete 12-15 repetitions of each exercise. In addition to burning more calories, research shows that functional full body training is the most effective fat loss strategy combined with a sound nutrition program.

Tips for starting out:

1) Start out slow. Exercise consistency and adherence is far more important than trying to break records!

2) Plan your schedule. Make an appointment with yourself so you don’t find excuses not to exercise. The best tip for exercises adherence is to exercise first thing in the morning before work.

3) Ask your friends to go with you. Make your exercise a social activity.

4) Warm up and stretch! I can’t stress this enough. Stretching will reduce the muscle soreness; increase your flexibility, blood circulation and aid in the prevention of injuries.

5) Join an outdoor fitness boot camp program. In addition to working with trained and experienced fitness professionals, Bangkok Boot Camp offers a motivational and social support group to help you achieve your goals faster and stick with your program.

6) Smile! Be active! And be Healthy!

Street Vendor in Bangkok

As you already have guessed, we’re big fans of food vendors in Bangkok. Mainly because they provide us with the delicious food we love to munch away on.

When you go on a Bangkok sightseeing trip, be sure to use your tongue as least as much as your eyes when exploring the city.

Here is a nice shot from a vendor who is selling corn – you find a lot of them, most of them come from Isaan, the north eastern region of Thailand where farming still is the main source of income.

You can also often find purple corn here – which is a lot more nutritious than the yellow corn that most of us are familiar with. It tastes pretty much the same, but if you come across a vendor, give it a try, your body will like it.
